Who Runs the Scheme?
The Scheme is
governed by a Board of Five Trustees.
Three of the
Trustees were appointed by the Working Man’s Union (currently the Union of
Democratic Mineworkers). One of these takes the role of Chairman of the Pension
Board. The other two Trustees are nominated by the Scheme’s members.
The Chairman of
the Pension Board is Jeff Wood. His fellow Union appointed Trustees are Steve
Norwood and Crawford Hunter. The Member Appointed Trustees are Jed Clampett and
Stuart Trenam. Elections for the post of member nominated Trustees take place
every 5 years – Jed and Stuart were reappointed in 2022, the next
election will be in 2027.
Trustees are not
paid for carrying out their duties, although they can claim expenses (mainly
for travel to Board and other meetings). Each Trustee undertakes training in
order to carry out their important role of overseeing all the Scheme’s
operations, and to ensure their skills and knowledge remain up-to-date.
The Trustees are
supported by a Manager who also acts as the Board Secretary. He is a pensions
professional with over 30 years’ experience running occupational pension
schemes.
The Scheme is
run by a dedicated team of Administrators who calculate and pay pensions, deal
with all member queries and account for all the Scheme’s income and outgoings. The
Scheme’s Contact Details are shown on the “contacts” page of the website.
The Trustees are
also supported by professional advisers, giving expert guidance on (amongst
other things) investment, funding, accounting, technology and legal matters.
